36th District Democrats to Vote on Backing Seattle Ballot Initiative 97
Democratic Party local may support Seattle Divest from War & Occupation
For Immediate Release: June 9, 2008
What: Monthly meeting of 36th District Democrats
When: Thursday June 12, 2008, 7 PM
Where: Calvary Lutheran Church, 7002 23rd Ave NW, in Ballard
On June 12, The 36th District Democrats will vote on whether to support ballot initiative 97, the Seattle Divest from War & Occupation campaign.
The resolution in support of I-97 has been introduced by former Seattle School Board member Amy Hagopian, who has led the effort to limit military recruiters’ access to students at Garfield High School.
“The 36th District Democrats are one of the more progressive Democratic Party locals in the entire state,” says Hagopian, who is also a precinct committee officer (PCO) in the organization. “So it would be natural for us to lead the way in supporting this important initiative. The PCO structure is a form of grassroots democracy, and so is the I-97 campaign. I hope that other Seattle area Democratic Party locals will adopt similar resolutions.”
Ballot initiative 97, if adopted, would require the Seattle Employees’ Retirement System to divest from any company that (1) participates directly in the occupation of Iraq; (2) is profiting from privatization of Iraqi state resources; (3) provides direct material support to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, and Golan Heights; and (4) has a direct presence in Israeli settlements in the occupied territories listed above. It would also require divestment from Israeli government bonds if Israel carries out a military attack on Iran without UN authorization.
